Clear Channel vs Public Art: What You Can Do!

As mentioned on this site, Clear Channel will- once again- face the City of Portland in Multnomah County Court in a trial scheduled for March 2006 before Judge Michael Marcus.

It's hard to say how that will turn out- more lengthy legal appeals (from both sides) while the art community waits a few more years to be able to paint a mural? An injunction from the court that stops the arts council's Public Art Mural Program cold? It's a mess allright.

But, we can affect the "court of public opinion" by telling our friends and co-workers what's going on. Community murals are an important form of artistic expression and are highly valued in many cultural traditions (think about Mexican mural artist Diego Rivera, for example).

We simply can't let Clear Channel's assault on public art go unchallenged.

Our message to Clear Channel is: "Hands Off" our neighborhood murals and public art!

What you can do:
- Write letters to the editor of the daily paper and neighborhood publications.

- Let Clear Channel Outdoor Division (billboards and "wall wrap" signs) know what you think. Clear Channel's phone number in Portland is 503.232-3111.

- Contact Clear Channel attorney Jill Gelineau c/o Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt (also Portland) 503.222-9981.

- Call Clear Channel lobbyist Len Bergstein at Northwest Strategies 503.241.8383.

- Or, paint a mural- create some public art yourself!
(Portland's Bureau of Development Services can tell you about relevant sign code regulations and other programs).
